Has your LEAN journey lost its pace ?
The results are starting to level off.
There are not so many suggestions for improvements anymore.
Employees think that the daily meetings are a waste of time.
Does it seem familiar?
The symptoms are many and they show up in all companies sooner or later.
Whether it is the large “company transformation” or the smaller local LEAN initiative in an area makes no difference. All LEAN initiatives hit these periods where you almost think: “that was it”.
And precisely to conclude that “this was apparently what LEAN could contribute with here in our company” is what 9 out of 10 companies do. Unfortunately, because the gain of biting the bullet and adjusting the direction can provide a huge gain for both the bottom line and self-respect.
All successful LEAN transformations have been through these downturns, but instead of throwing in the towel, they have paused, evaluated the process, adjusted and pushed the development back on. Gradually, the organization becomes experts in making these adjustments, and the employees gain great confidence that they will not be left behind alone.
It can be difficult to figure out what has gone wrong when evaluating the process and the reason why the transformation has lost its breath. It may therefore be a good idea to get an external “expert” to give advice and guidance on how best to proceed. It can be through sparring with the LEAN manager, with the management team or both.
I have implemented and evaluated many LEAN transformations in both small and large companies during the last 20 years. I know the feeling when the energy and belief in the “project” disappears, and I know that at least the first few times you need a look “from the outside” to be able to see through what is happening. With the knowledge that successful LEAN transformations ALWAYS create amazing results, the question is not: “Does LEAN work for us?”, the question is instead: “What do we need to do for LEAN to work for us?”
